She looked down at the envelope clutched in her hand, a large E written in very elegant letters. She still hadn't opened the envelope since she left the registration office. It all pretty much seemed like a dream to her. Her mind was weary from days without sleep and what she ached for now was a nice long rest in a warm bed.

With her sharpened claw she scratched open the envelope slowly and looked at the paper inside, scrawled with all her class assignments and instructions for each one. She reached in and plucked out the key, holding it between her fingers, feeling the cold metal against her skin. It made her shiver, or was it just the large corridor she was standing in that was making her cold?

She had taken an exceptionally long time to reach the Women's Dormitory as she had stopped a few times to eye the beautiful tapestries or paintings on walls or feel a soft breeze in the courtyard. She had enjoyed the trip over here, although the campus, or...grounds or whatever you would call this area seemed to be empty and lifeless.

Christine tucked the map of the grounds into her pocket of her jacket as well as the envelope she had just opened and looked down at the handle of the door she was standing in front of, the same elegant "E" inscribed on the door as was on the envelope.

"Here goes nothing. Wish me luck Martha." She silently whispered to herself as she slid the key into the lock on the door, her ears twitching underneath her beanie as the latch inside clicked unlocking the door and opening itself for her. As she stood in the hallway, her back-pack still over her shoulder she eyed her way around the room. Stone floors with a large elegant carpet covering them, the only light came through a large window, framed with satin crimson curtains overlooking the courtyard. It was furnished with a large four post canopy bed with it's own satin crimson sheets and there seemed to be various items around the room used for decoration. Vases', lamps, even a statue or two. A very large mirror overlooked a small dresser and a night-stand stood next to the bed. As Christine's eyes continued to scan the room she noticed a large chandelier hanging from the middle of the room and a light switch right next to the door.

"Whoa."

Her bag slid off her shoulders and with a soft thud hit the floor. She was in awe. She was expecting....well she wasn't sure what she was expecting but this...this left her speechless. She thought it was strange at first that a school would be in a castle or that a school that was in a castle would want HER as a student. Her mind went over these small details over and over and over again on the trip here, but eventually she became to drained to even care. Her questions would still have to wait as she felt her tail start to twitch underneath her baggy sweat pants, aching and dying to relax in the bed.

She looked around the hallway and noticed that the corridor was silent and still. She picked up her bag off of the floor and tossed it just inside the room, shutting and locking the door behind her. As soon as the latch clicked on the door she threw off her beanie and kicked off her sweatpants, letting her ears and tail breathe freely. She stretched and twisted and flexed her muscles, her tail swishing back and forth and her ears twitching excitedly to be out of the confinement of the hat. Christine reached her fingers through her hair, scratching her scalp and fluffing it up a bit, giving herself a bit of a scratch with her claws as she purred, grinning, enjoying the feeling of being alone and free to be herself.

She climbed into the bed, unzipping her jacket and tossed it on the floor but first taking the map and envelope out of the pocket and setting it on the nightstand next to the bed. She would definitely like to find out why she was here...but it would have to wait. Before she knew it, her eyes began to close and her body began to sink into the bed, the satin sheets feeling so good against her skin it made her tingle and purr louder. Her claws softly dug into the sheets, showing her comfort and relaxation as she took a long and very much needed nap.

*** The soft sounds of someone humming rings through the room, everything is bathed in sunlight, everything is so bright, and hard to see. It's all so fuzzy, and the hum is so distant, but it's warm and comforting, and the music soothing to the ears. Walking forward into the light, the elderly woman is sitting on a soft yellow couch, knitting her needles and smiling while humming her soft tune. She looks up at you and and gives you a sweet smile. Her hair is pure white and looks like snow, and her eyes are a soft grayish-brown. Her hands are old and wrinkled as she reaches out with you with one of them and softly says, "Don't be afraid." ***

Waking up from her dream, Christine looks out the window as the sun in setting and she takes in her surroundings again. Her dream of Martha made her heart ache as she reached down to her chest to softly finger the pendant on the small silver chain around her neck. The pendant itself was a small silver circle, that almost looked like a coin but in the middle of the circle was a bright blue sapphire. Martha had given the necklace to Christine on her 18th birthday and re-told the story of how it had been passed down for three generations and the story of how it came to be in their possession.

Thinking of Martha brought a soft smile to Christine's face and she managed to climb out of bed. She remade the bed as neatly as she could. She found that satin wrinkled alot more than she liked and became frustrated fairly easily after the fourth attempt to smooth out the sheets. She made sure the map of the grounds and the envelope of her classes were still on the nightstand before she began to unpack her things. She picked up her coat and sat it on the door handle so it hung there loosely and was easy to remember if she decided to go out. Christine then grabbed her backpack and unpacked what little she had brought with her. Quite a few undergarments and a few changes in shirts and pants as well as multiple beanies. She walked over to the window and eyed the view for a moment, watching the sunset fill the sky with color, bathing the world in a soft pinky-orange. Her ears perked as she looked back at the poorly made bed. Was she ready to face the world yet? Did Martha's words really need to be taken to heart right now? She walked over to the mirror and gave her ears a soft little rub and decided today was finished and she would spend tomorrow greeting the world with a smile and a full heart.

Christine climbed back into bed, this time completely under the bedsheets, feeling their warmth and smoothness against her as she fell into a deep natural sleep that held her until the next day as the sun blazed through the window.

She awoke with a startled expression, aching for a clock. "Time, time, time. What time is it? Am I late? " She grabbed her sweatpants, still wearing the same clothes she wore the day before and tugged them on quickly, trying to hide her tail as best as possible but it was not wanting to cooperate on such quick notice. She grabbed her beanie and tugged it over her head with a soft wince as her ears flattened down against her head roughly. She grabbed the map and her envelope and stuffed them into her jacket pocket and tugged the door to her room, hoping she wasn't late for the first day of classes.

She liked to be on time, even ahead of time. She silently whispered under her breath the entire way to the classroom area "crap crap crap crap crap" with her head down in the map, focused intently on her mission, not noticing the time or any other people around her.

[Exit to Formalities Class.]

She rushed through the door, slammed it behind her, the tears threatening to push their way out before she could get to the safety of her room. Her heart pounding in her chest and her fist clenched around the pendant on her neck. It hurt, it hurt so much she wanted to scream to make it go away. The tears streamed down her cheeks like streams of water, she couldn't fight it anymore.

Stupid hat! She gripped the beanie with her free hand and tossed it as hard as she could, next her sweats. This was not her home, this was a place of stone and iron and rock, cold, unloving and lonely. She felt lost and so out of place. She was wrong for trying to fit in, she was wrong to think that she could live like this. Her body hurt, her mind hurt, her heart hurt. She crawled into bed and ached for sleep...She closed her eyes but the tears that still trickled down her face refused to let her enjoy the peace of her quiet room. She pulled her knees in tight to her chest, wrapped her arm around a pillow and nuzzled herself into the most comfortable position that she could have ever wished for...but still she could not sleep.

It was the same ache she had that woke her up that morning. The same sense of dread and knowing and sadness as she walked down the hallway. The same tightness in her chest as she opened the door to Martha's bedroom and not a sound could be heard. Her lifeless body in front of Christine's eyes and it built up inside her, burning and stinging and a sickly disgust that made her want to purge every ounce of herself just to make it go away. She had cried...she wept for days...until there were no more tears that could be wept. She sat in the hallway, staring at the door, her overgrown claws leaving an indentation in the floor as she drug her finger forward and back again. The soft scratching noise the only thing filling the entire house with sound. She didn't know how long she sat there, no one ever came...She didn't feel the urge to eat...to sleep...or anything...she just waited...waited for something, anything to take her away from the pain she felt.

Christine shook her head, shaking the haunting image from her mind. She shifted in the bed, pulling the blankets around her as she looked up at the canopy above her bed, her nose stuffy and eyes red.

"I just don't know what to do anymore Martha...without you here...why'd you leave me....."

She rolled out of bed and walked over to the dresser and opened one of the drawers. An old knitted blanket lay in the chest. Christine pulled it out and wrapped what little she could around her as it was small, made for a child. She crawled into bed and pulled the blanket around her, smelling it, taking in the scent of her home and of Martha and letting it sooth her heart and soul. She closed her eyes...clenching the blanket tighter and tighter around her till she felt she couldn't move...then she slept.

So the start of the day was great. First he had to register to half of the recently released psych ward patients who came to the school. Then he had to get his whole 'stress release' activity destroyed by having some pretty boy who just learned about periods and boys. Finally, he had a pretty nasty spill with a female he barely knew, looked like a total jackass prick, and stormed out of there like a 13 year old school girl. It was humiliating and downright pitiful! It not only crushed the little man standing tall, but it also destroyed any temporary self confidence he had gained that following day. It also caused him to not only question his sanity, but the way his life was living until now. It was not as if he thought he was turning into a fairy or a sword fighter, it was just the fact that he was finding things that he loved to be different... hell, even saying the word 'love' caused him to cringe in fear of bunnies exploding from his forehead and shitting rainbows out of his ass.

What a funny sight, indeed!

But why the hell was he at some girl's door, he barely knew, at 3 in the morning?!!? Well, given the fact he couldn't close his eyes for longer than a few seconds before wanting to jump up and strangle himself... he really didn't have a choice in the matter. Of course, common decency would easily spell to come back sometime when normal people are awake, but Riley was not considered... 'normal' nor were any of the people in this school. So in the case of 'normality' it was probably proper to show up in male PJs at 3am (White T-shirt and PJ pants) with whip-lashed hair and a few sweat drops on his brow from running to work up some sleep. Yeah. He looked like a class A respectable man. Might as well put a tattoo on his back that screamed 'child-molesting-rapist' along with a bag of candy that would eventually lead to a tinted van-

He knocked on her door, very lightly.

...this was a dumb idea. Why the fucking hell was he here, anyways?

*** Dark, cloudy, it wasn't silent either. There was like a distant hum or a roar that filled...whatever this place was. Her eyes hurt, her mouth was dry...and there was nothing there. ***

Her eyes shot open. Her hair was standing on the back of her neck and she felt like there was impending doom standing over her. It was heavy and thick and she felt like she couldn't breath. She sat up in bed slowly and looked back down at her pillow. Stains...she slowly reached up and touched her cheeks, still sticky and still from the tears she had wept earlier.

Christine looked out her window, it was dark...Had she really slept that long? She reached up and rubbed her head, scratching her scalp softly as she tried to shake loose that eerie feeling from her nightmare. It wasn't that it was scary, cause it wasn't but it didn't feel right. It was that feeling when you were standing at the top of the stairs, looking down into the dark basement with the door open. You'd been down there a million times, you knew there was nothing down there except dusty old cans and tools, and yet you still stood there, wondering why no one ever fixed the light, why there were so many spiders and why it reminded you of a creepy movie you stayed up too late to watch behind your parents back. Still you stand there, looking down and it comes, that moment of "something can get me" and you hope that you can slam the door in time before it makes it's way up the stairs to you. She shook, physically shook herself to try to get it to go away.

She laid back down in bed, curling up with her blanket again and slowly rubbed the stitching, closing her eyes. It still didn't feel right, but she was tired and wanted to get some sleep. As she closed her eyes, she thought she had slept but she found herself awake again...-Yawn- She rubbed her eyes slowly and decided to get a drink. She had a bottle of water sitting on her desk from the previous day. It was warm, but it wetted her tongue ad she felt she could sleep again. Tonight was a restless night...She glanced over at the clock on her desk as she drank her water. 3 am. Too early for anyone to be awake.

Just before she walked back to bed, she looked at the door, her ears twitching. Was something there? Is that what woke her up? She stared at it for quite a while, and when she didn't hear anything else she decided that it was nothing and crawled back into bed. Mmmm, warm bed.

She slipped between the covers and let her toes wriggle before settling in again, unaware that what had truly woken her were the sounds of his knocking.

Standing there, twiddling his own thumbs, he had his own thoughts to himself. What in his right mind made him believe that some random girl would be up at 3 in the morning? Further more, it was supposed to be a school night and they were 'supposed' to be going to class. On that thought, he realized other than his survival class, there really wasn't much else going on in that school except a tea party session every so often. He was kept out of the loop for the most part on when the classes would really begin, so it was as if they were on a small term vacation with a requirement to poke their heads through the door every so often. So his rationale for classes to have a decent early bedtime was not a reason. To be honest, she was the closest to the normality he had seen so far in this school besides himself... 'gift' wise. He was just a normal human with a cybernetic arm....nothing really as incredible as vampires, lycans....fucking elves leaping through trees like small ninja children. It was a miracle within itself that he was able to hold onto his sanity in such a place like this!

Hell, it was a wonder why he stuck around this school after all that has happened.

Maybe he was just some kind of adrenaline junkie. It would explain why he was able to keep his sanity in such a dark and mysterious place. Or maybe he was just freaking crazy, and that this was the luney bin and this was just all within his imagination. Such thoughts did not pass the boy who stood at the doorway to a rather strange girl, the pang feeling of guilt boiling within him. He had to talk to her, at least see if she was going to be okay. Even though he could be an insensitive bastard at times, he at least tell that something was amiss when he couldn't find her. Of course, it was late before he realized how much time had passed in his room. He had at least contended with his dark nature, figuring out that his old self was bleeding in once again. Instead of dealing with the issue head on, he merely pocketed it away for the time being. A way to zone out and focus on the task at hand was not foreign to a man such as himself.

Standing there in front of the door way, he did not hear sounds from within the room. Moments would crawl by as he would rasp very quietly again, just loud enough for the observer of the room to hear... and no one else. He wasn't trying to wake up the entire hall during lights out, especially since he didn't want to be caught by a random female walking through the dorm's hallway this late at night. IT would be rather awkward explaining that kind of situation... especially by the way he dressed.

Upon hearing no responses from his quiet knocks, he began to realize that the girl was probably asleep. There was no sense prying the issue as it was late and he was starting to feel sleepy. No sense whatsoever for him to stand idly in this hallway. No sense what so ever to even try to knock again, let alone enter the room. He started to turn around as he felt his mind go blank. In the dark, silent hallway he started to remember a scene from his past. Once more, he saw a little girl being pushed on the swings once again. A tithe of pride and affection would rise up from within, and once more he would feel that surprising jitter of wanting to... 'pick it up and take it home'. It was a rather... peculiar feeling, but it was not foreign to him. It blinded him temporary to his surroundings, causing him to wander what the hell his hands were doing.

Shaking his head, the cloud of peculiarity would begin to waver away as his hand would shut the door very quietly behind him. Whatever that was causing such a disturbance in his thoughts, he managed to rid himself of the nasty deeds by letting a long sigh escape his lips. Whatever the hell brought on such a thing like that? His hand would fiddle within his pocket as he took a few steps into the room-wait... room? Door close? His mind must be seeing things. Did he black out again? Rubbing his fingers inside of his pockets, he realized that there was another set of keys from within. Huh, that's strange... why do I have .... As his eyes adjusted to the darkness of the room, he had realized that he was not in the hallway anymore. Furthermore, he had realized that he managed to take the master key form his room to the dormitory.

And lastly... he made the fatal flaw of letting his defenses down as he took a step into the foreign room, smelling something more of a sweet and elegant scent. As his mind drew blank, he began to realize that he was not in Kansas anymore. He was somewhere deep within the territory of the predator known as the 'female'. As the tiny voice of a well known (and deceased, crykie!) Australian narrated his worst fears of awkwardness, he slowly took a look around the room to realize that he had just entered the room known as Christine.... and for shits and giggles, she was laying nearby in her bed. Hopefully sleeping in her bed, and at full view of the door from where he was standing. His body would back up against the door, bumping against it lightly as he froze up... trying to figure out what the hell just happened.

She hadn't really fallen asleep, she was just quietly laying in bed, her eyes staring at the back of her eyelids, wishing for sleep, wishing for daylight, wishing for anything. Then she heard a thump. Or could you call it a bump? She opened her eyes, her senses all beginning to work their magic. Her ears started to swivel, like radials or satellites, picking up sounds in the room. A soft creak over by the window, the rustling of wind outside...a soft shuffling...by the door. Her nose picking up a soft smell...of something...Sweat. Nervousness. Fear. And then her eyes zeroed in, plucking out just a faint image in the dark room against the door.

Her heart began to pound against her chest. Should she scream, could she grab something heavy to hit it with...why would someone or something be in her room. And hadn't she locked the door? She grabbed the blankets and pulled them tightly around her. If she moved it might attack...if she didn't she would be defenseless. She would be defenseless anyways. She glanced down and looked at her nails, they had grown out and were extremely sharp. With all that had been going on, she had forgotten to trim them and they had come in handy at certain times. She smiled a little bit.

They could be sharp enough to cut...or slightly injure someone for a quick get away. Her heart began to race in her chest again as she moved without thinking. Pushing herself up on top of the bed, screaming and rushing towards the figure in the dark hands flailing out in front of her. She couldn't even see where she was going as she had her eyes closed and head turned sideways. Probably not the best thing to do but she was scared!

Thump-thump ..... Thump-Thump

The entire set of events in Riley's eyes were set into slow motion.

In the small seconds he had before the big bang, he tried furiously to fish for the door handle, which was hard to find when it was dark and with his back against the door. The tiny bumps and rustles of a flesh rubbing against the door would be heard. He was frightened, and scared. Usually his black outs didn't lead him into situations such as this. From what he usually remembered, he would just end up walking outside or losing track of time for an hour at the most watching TV. He had never pick pocketed or broken into any stores or houses during his moments of weakness. Somehow he had made the fatal flaw of letting his defenses down and now he was stuck in a rather awkward and dangerous position where a girl was rushing towards him in an attack stance, screaming her head off in full force as she charged right towards him in the middle of the night.

Through the moonlight that shined through the windows, he saw the glint of extended claws reaching out, crying aloud to rake the flesh against his body.

With that, his more animalistic instincts kicked in. His mind started to draw blank, and all those little fears went away as he prepared for the moment she would strike. His mind was already calculating the moves, mumbling off a duck followed by a palm punch to the chest, then a roundhouse kick to put her down. But in those moments of clarity, common sense came into play. She was not a combatant, just a scared little girl in her room. There was no sense fighting her, as he was the aggressor in this situation. Without a moments thought, his hand finally stopped fidgeting long enough for him to grasp a hold of the handle of the door... ripping it open and duck curling under the door and out into the hallway.

But not before a flailing claw reached out and scratched at his arm, ripping through his t shirt and causing a thin blood trail to be left in its wake.

Groaning deeply and masking his voice, he began to bolt it down the hall as fast as it was humanly possible, noting the pain in his arm by throwing a covered hand over it to conceal a possible path of blood. He would duck into the shadows afterward, disappearing into his own room once her screams and scuttles collapsed into the night.

Thump. She felt a hard...cold surface hit her. Her eyes were still tightly shut and she was still afraid to open them. She hoped that whatever she hit was not alive as she lay pressed against the cold surface, listening. Nothing. Silence. It was all quiet, no rustling, no thumping, no awkward breathing. It was just her room.

She opened her eyes and glanced as she had hit the door as she looked down and around. She flipped the light on and blinked slightly as her eyes adjusted to the brightness. Was she dreaming? Having a nightmare? No...nothing could have felt that real...and she wouldn't have climbed out of bed...would she?

Something was tickling her nose...something strange and it was so faint...She sniffed...what was this? Sniff. Sniff. It was definitely around the door. She looked down and happened to catch a glimpse of her hand. One of her claws was red...

She pulled it closer to investigate, looking at the nefarious liquid now staining her claw. It wasn't much, but when she sniffed it again, she realized it was blood, the metal coppery smell was overwhelming. She wasn't dreaming, there was something in her room...Christine looked out the window and shivered a bit, realizing she was still in just her undies and a large t-shirt. She glanced back down at the lock on the door, still befuddled at how this stranger could have gotten in her room with the door locked. I did lock the door. I know I did. She clicked the knob over once more to lock it in place again and decided to take an extra precaution by placing a chair in front of the knob. It had worked in movies...it might work now.

She kept the light on and closed the curtains to her window, then curled up in bed, pressing her back against the headboard and pulling the blankets around her. Her body was on edge, tense and she was NOT having a good night. The unsettling dream she had before this all happened must have been a bad sign after all...

Christine sat for hours, watching the clock and her room, her eyes growing weaker and weaker by the minute, but they still refused to close. She was too scared too close them for fear that she would be attacked by the mysterious stranger who managed to haunt her just a few hours ago, and like a ghost, it vanished. Could there be ghosts in the castle? Her imagination was running wild again...

She could see the sunshine starting to poke it's way through the heavy satin curtains drawn over her window. Daylight. She went over to the window and pulled the curtains open once more, gripping them---ow! She jerked her hand back, looking down at her middle finger on her left hand. It was swollen and more pink than usual. She reached out and gave it a gentle squeeze and hissed again. I must have hurt it when I ran into the door....

She looked over her back at the clock. 8: 30 AM. Wasn't there an infirmary around here? She held her injured hand close to her body, as to not cause any more damage to an already damaged finger. She reached into her night-stand drawer and pulled out her map, spreading it out on the bed. Yes! There it is. Surely the infirmary would be open this time in the morning...She hoped. But was she brave enough to face the world, knowing that there was someone or something out there after her? She had to...She just had to go....
